The Origin of the Name

A People. A Rivier. A Purpose

Long before there was software, there was the Vai script. In the 1830s, in what is now Liberia, a Vai man is credited with creating a writing system from nothing. Tradition says he dreamed its characters into being. It was invented, and it became one of the very few fully indigenous writing systems in the world. Two of Vaizadi's founders, Ciapha Diggs and Omar Fahnbulleh, are Vai.

The second half, zadi, comes from Nzadi, the Kikongo word for "river." It was used by communities along the Congo River before "Congo" became the river's dominant name. Together they make Vaizadi - connecting a people who wrote their own system into existence with the river that has always carried goods, people, and ideas.
